Socials 10: Dissent and Rebellion
Your Task
Research an area in the world where citizens have protested or rebelled using violence against a situation where they felt their rights were being violated. Some situations have a lengthy history and others were relatively short in duration. Some are still not resolved. Prepare a snapshot presentation using a single PowerPoint slide or a poster. Criteria for the presentation are listed below:
Visuals
Each slide must contain only one image., and no more than 6-10 words. Rather than full sentences or point form, use key words to highlight your point.
Oral Presentation
Bibliography
Use a variety of appropriate sources, document these formally and produce a bibliography.
Note your sources in your presentation explaining how they were useful to your research.
Audience Participation
As you listen to each presentation, note any similarities or differences to the rebellions of 1837. (you may need to re-read pages 1-3 in text book of the actual rebellion and review the reasons of discontent for the people of upper Canada on pages 4-8). Be prepared to discuss these.

- State who is in conflict and state the type of conflict (political, ethnic, religious, economic, etc.)
- Describe the issue. Discuss the causes.
- Provide a brief account of the actual uprising, clash, violent protest. Include what the outcome was, deaths injuries, arrests, defections
- State how the conflict has been resolved or its current status.
- Answer the question: Based on your research thus far, do you feel this rebellion is/was justified? Support your opinion with evidence from your research
- Connect the conflict to the Rebellions of 1837.

Reasons for conflict are varied. As well, there is a range in the severity of violence involved in the various conflicts listed below, but in all cases the protesters believe that some form of injustice is at issue. As you research your topic, keep in mind that there are always two sides to an issue. These are some samples listed below, feel free to use others that you may know about.
