Newspapers and Periodical Archives
Google News Archives: locate photographic editions of newspapers from the past. Type a search string in the search box or click on one of the newspapers to see browse the daily editions. The site provides excellent primary source material for history students. The project was shut down in 2011 but the scanned broadsheets are still available online. Pay attention to the layout of the newspaper as where an article is located says a lot about its significance.
Google News Archive Hints
One ways to search the Google News Archive is to do a site specific search. The URL of the site is .news.google.com. So you
can search for Hiroshima as follows:
hiroshima site:.news.google.com
This will bring up any article in the archive that has been catalogued with the word Hiroshima. Students will have to look at the
date at the top of the page (many may not know this) to find out if the article is contemporary to the event or looking back. You
can also search the archive once in it. There's a search box that says "Search Archive."
To get a permalink, you click on "Link to Article" in the top right corner, and then on the headline. The link will pop up in the box
below "Link to Article."
Life Magazine: an American news magazine that ran from 1883-2002. The full archive of the issues of the main run (1936–1972) is available through Google Books. You can select an issue by date, then enter your keywords and click "Search all issues"

New York State Historic Newspapers: provides free online access to a wide range of newspapers chosen to reflect New York's unique history. To search the entire collection, use the Search Tab. Or, click on a county to search or browse geographically.
Old Magazines Online: the personal website of an old magazine enthusiast. Contains old articles, essays, poetry, cartoons and photographs that were collected from a number of different libraries, bookshops and yard sales throughout the United States and Europe.
