SS 10: Is Louis Riel a Hero or a Traitor?
To what extent were Louis Riel’s actions justified in both the 1869 and 1885 rebellions. Did the conduct of the trial in 1885 play a role in shaping people’s opinion of him. Using the DVD and your text book, evaluate the role of Riel in BOTH the Manitoba (1869) and Saskatchewan (1885) rebellions. Read the 2004 newspaper article from the National Post outlining two different perspectives of Louis Riel. Using 2-3 other sources, investigate and further collect evidence to support your side in concluding that Louis Riel is a hero or a traitor. It may also be worth your while to have criteria as to what constitutes a “hero” and a “traitor”.
