Socials 8: UN Summit

Unit Task

With the recent conflict in the Middle East between Israel and Palestine, the United Nations is seeking the advice of historians to decide if a peace agreement can be reached.

The United Nations wants you to answer the following questions and prepare a presentation to the Secretary General:

1.     Should Jerusalem develop a peace charter representing three religions?

2.      Are there common threads in the three major religions in Jerusalem that suggest that peace can be achieved?

Your Task Today

The purpose of this activity is to find specific evidence supporting the idea that the United Nations is the appropriate body to take this on.

Part One

Answer questions provided by your teacher.  These will familiarize you with the UN website.  Here is the link to the United Nations home page: http://www.un.org/en/.

Part Two

a.)    Open your Noodle Bib Account and create a citation for the United Nations website -http://www.un.org/en/index.shtml. Create a note card connected to your UN citation.

b.)    Go to the Home Page of the United Nations organization:http://www.un.org/en/index.shtml.  Read the tabs across the top and the information in the three columns on the page.  Select three headings you might click on to try to find information that will help you answer the question “Is this the right body to take this on.”  In the “My Ideas” box on your NoodleBib note card, write these down.

c.)    Go to the page called UN at a Glance - http://www.un.org/en/aboutun/index.shtml.   Now gather evidence to suggest whether the UN is the right organization to take on the work explained in the Unit Task  above.  Give the note card a title and save it.

d.)   Move on to the preamble of the UN Charter -http://www.un.org/en/documents/charter/preamble.shtml. Find evidence in the Charter that suggests whether or not the UN is the right organization to take on the task.

e.)    Finally, read Chapter 1 of the Charter –http://www.un.org/en/documents/charter/chapter1.shtml, and continue taking notes that provide evidence to support or defeat the idea that the UN is the right body to take on the work of finding a solution to the Middle East conflict described above.

Part Three

In the “My Ideas” box, answer the question: Do you think the UN is the right body to take this on?  Then write down the 3 most important details from the reading that support your answer.
