Citing Images Used in your Research Projects

In order to meet copyright obligations when using images for educational purposes you must cite your source, just like you do for written information.

(If you need help finding copyright friendly Images for your research, look at the Copyright Friendly Images tab under Academic Integrity on the menu bar of the library website.)

Using Noodle Tools to Cite your Images
Noodle tools will start by asking you where the image is?  Likely it is either in a database or on a website.  Select the appropriate one.

If you are using the Junior setting, you will then have the choice of:

  • Photo or image (born Digital), or
  • Work of Visual Art
Picture
Use born digital when the photo, image or illustration was created in digital form or when you do not know where the original image is physically stored (Noodle Tools)

Use Work of Visual Art, when it is a digital representation of an image (photograph, painting, drawing) that exists in hard copy.

Rather than copying the image from the search results page, go to the website that hosts it and try to find out the title, artist, date etc. for a complete citation.  Copyright friendly images usually provide this information.
If you are using the Advanced level of Noodle Tools you will have many more options to choose from including:

  • Cartoon or Comic Strip
  • Chart, Table, Infographic (Born Digital)
  • Map or Chart (Born Digital)
  • Map or Chart (Published in an Archive)
  • Photo or Illustration
  • Photo or Image (Born Digital)
  • Work of Visual Art
Picture
Locate as much information as you can for a complete citation.  If you are posting the image digitally, consider linking the image back to the source you got it from.

By including a citation for every image you use, you have met the copyright requirement to use publically available internet images for educational purposes.
